Want to Book More Cargo Space for Less? Try Maritime Shipping

While conducting research for her book, Ninety Percent of Everything: Inside Shipping, the Invisible Industry That Puts Clothes on Your Back, Gas in Your Car, and Food on Your Plate, investigative author Rose George was granted passage on a massive Maersk container vessel—the Kendal—to get an inside look at the logistics of international ocean-bound freight.

The book’s lofty title still does not quite manage to capture the true immensity of the global shipping industry. Its contents, however, prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that the world of international freight movement is one of humanity’s greatest feats of ingenuity.

Here’s Where We Stand After Six Decades of Growth and Evolution in Maritime Shipping…

SINCE
1970

the volume of maritime trade has expanded four times over.

IN
2011

$170 trillion in goods were cleared for import at 360 United States ports.

In the same year
2011

U.S. maritime trade accounted for more than 80 times the value of all U.S. trade in 1960.

OVER
100,000

Total Ships at Sea

THERE ARE
6,000

Container Vessels

  • The largest container vessel can accommodate 15,000 boxes, OR 746,000,000
bananas (that's one banana for every European citizen!)
  • 11,000 miles: Distance spanned if all Maersk containers were lined up side by side. That’s nearly half the circumference of the globe!
  • 60 miles: Length of traffic line if all containers from Maersk’s Kendal were loaded onto trucks. Could you imagine the road rage?
  • 1,500 miles: Stacked height of all Maersk containers. The same as 7,530 Eiffel Towers!
